Key Insights from Guest Speaker Mr. Jason Chee Chin Tau
Mr. Jason's presentation unpacked the concept of success, drawing on his experiences in Cambodia. He revealed the challenges he faced working in Cambodia; followed by how he overcame them, allowing us insights into his strategies and core values he followed and still continues to hold onto until now. To get to where he is today; Mr. Jason, as he simply put it, believes that listening to instructions is key to success.
Most of the session is focused on personal development. Time is spent either on explaining, or supporting the point made below. These points are:
Learn from Successful Role Models: Know where you want to be, Identify successful individuals in your field, those you consider as role models. Study their approach and the strategies that led them to success. If things go wrong, you can always find another way and figure out the best solution for your unique case. Don't be discouraged if the path takes longer than expected. To follow their approach means that you move one step at a time, closer to where you want to be. Life is situational, and success timelines vary from individual to individual.
Know the what, how and why: Start by knowing what it is that you are getting yourself into. Say, you wanted to be an accountant. Do you know what accounting is? Once you have the answer to that, you need to know the how. Do you have the necessary skills for it? Do you know how to do it? And lastly, you have the why. Ask yourself why you want to become so? It is very important to know why you do what you do. Without a purpose, one is bound to be hesitant, and is more likely to look back and question their decisions.
Embrace Choice and Responsibility: Understand that in life, there will always be a choice. This goes for both success and failure. Whether you choose to succeed or fail, know the choice is your own, so are the consequences that come along with it. Good or bad, you must accept and bear it.
Q&A session
During the Q&A session, members raised challenges that can hauled one from success, particularly dealing with difficult decisions and overcoming obstacles. Mr. Jason shared his own personal experience as well as insights from other inspiring individuals.
He stressed about the importance of knowing the purpose of why you are doing what you are currently doing. Knowing why you're doing something and being brave enough to face the consequences can make decision-making and maintaining discipline easier.
He also offered a unique perspective about making choices. Mr. Jason suggested that when we make decisions, we often have fewer options available compared to when we later feel regretful. This is because new choices become available with time. According to him, dwelling on past decisions is unproductive; the choice you made at the time was the best one with the information you had. In addition, Mr. Jason Chee outlined his personal strategy he employed to ensure AIA's sustainable success, which encompasses three key components: providing professional advice, unique opportunities, and best-in-class training, collectively referred to as the PUB strategy.
