Westic Media Limited report

Westec Media Limited (WML) was incorporated in 2011 as a distributor of films in Cambodia. The company have been growing quickly and become one of the largest theatrical content in Cambodia with 150 titles released within it first two years and a half. WML is a primary business which is distribute HD film that corporate with the international studio content Hollywood, universal, Disney, and more including Cambodia film maker. Anyway, the mission of WML is to invest on making fun for all movie lover in all ages especially youth, so many movies that released from WML is hit and successful from youth supporter. WML is successfully in film distributor, so what is the strategies of CEO to lead the company and become successful? And what stories behind their success? So here are the result from International Business Club interviewing with Mr. Michael Chai, CEO of WML.

     

       How WML become a successful company on distributing movie?

There is a process in establish a successful film-distributer company. WML acts as a representative of the big companies oversea and get the percentage from the profits. Mr. Michael Chai stated there are 5 steps to pursue the successful of the company:

1. Make sure it is right time to get start by studying of the market.

2. Apply to ministry of culture and fine arts

3. Using rating system to know the quality from customers

4. Having good Classification

5. Believe in employee skill

He continued the good teamwork the most important key for the successful of the company to maintain their strength and pursue their vision and mission to be the strong one as a rock. The team know their goal and vision.

Is there any difficulty that he faced in doing his business?

There are many obstacles that he faced in doing his business. Firstly, the hardest part is how to get the right people on board. Due to the language barrier and the scarce of people with certain skills and profession, it was a major setback for running WML at first. Secondly, he also faced with some dissatisfaction with his effort to create local film production. Besides being a distributors of film from well-known studios, WML has also invested in a few local movies such as “RUN” and “2 Tiger Girls”. Unfortunately, these films didn’t generate any revenue for the company. Another difficulty is it is not an easy task for WML to get the movie license from big companies. The big companies are very selective when permitting the company to show their movies. They required good company with a good reputation and trustable.

      How to manage his employee?

“We don’t manage people, we manage the result”

That the quote that is most admirable by the CEO of WML. In the environment of his company, the term ‘Individualism’ where it provide a challenging atmosphere and equality, nobody above anybody else. It acts as the motivation that keep pushing his team to work hard to achieve a common goal. Moreover, WML employee also get benefits such as health insurance and two Saturday off every. Furthermore, every years, if the company is successful, there will be a trip for the whole team to go on a holiday overseas to places like Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore… etc. This believed to get exposure to everybody, to motivate them to continue working hard for the upcoming year.

       How can WML compete with other company?

The features that differentiate WML from other company is that they believe in giving back to the country that they invested in. The profits that he earned, some of it is being reinvest back into the company. They are trying to invest in the local films and bringing Khmer contents to other countries. Furthermore, they have a strategy of providing affordable to customers of different regions at the outskirt of Phnom Penh and provinces. They developed cheaper solution and offer cheaper package for those people in the far regions, so that everyone can afford with the price and everyone can watch.

       In what kind of movie that Cambodia people like the most?

Cambodia teenagers these days are interested in many kind of movies even international or national movies. They usually spend their free time after school to watch Khmer movies when there is Khmer movies available. Moreover, the most common type of movie which is really interested for them is Horror Comedy.

     Have the company plan to open branch in other country in future?

WML is really working hard in order to achieve their success and they are also exporting Khmer movies to other international countries. They are now register in Laos, more than this WML wants to export to Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and China. By exporting our movies to the internationality, it will give advantages to the author and actors. They will be happy to make more kind of movies in order to show other countries that our country also can make good movies like other famous countries.

Conclusion

All in all, WML is a company to entertain people by distributed both international movies and local movies. The company also take action to maintain Cambodia movie by supporting local film making company and planning to distribute Cambodia movie to abroad.
